Jones fracture

There are several different types of fractures that can affect the base of the fifth metatarsal bone on the outside of the foot. The most common is what has become known as the Jones fracture which is a linear fracture of the base of the metatarsal. It was first described by a physician who had the fracture himself. Another type of fracture is an avulsion fracture in which the base of the fifth metatarsal is torn off by the tendon of the peroneus brevis muscle.  Another problem with the base of the fifth metatarsal is Iselins disease which si a problem of the growth plate.
